Why do so many people think they'll have to learn Spanish with the growth of the Hispanic population?
Many people think that since it's said Hispanics will about 30% of the U.S. population by 2050, they will have to learn Spanish? The Hispanics who speak only Spanish are the recent immigrants. Their children speak english and they prefer to speak english over spanish, so why would Spanish be necessary?

It’s something pathetic and somewhat prejudiced. I hate to throw the prejudice card but it seems to me this is the reason. People are obsessed about being "invaded" by Hispanics. I doubt we will become the majority anytime soon. I came here at the age of 6 and I speak English fluently and also Spanish. I watch English-speaking television and prefer to speak English. Many children of first-generation immigrants do not even speak Spanish. We are adapting and assimilating despite what some might say.
Sure, there are some who speak Spanish even after being here for some time. But they aren’t indicative of the general Hispanic population. Also, many have this twisted perception that America will be taken by brown people. It’s stupid since Hispanics can be white, black, and brown. It’s not a race.
I think people are just afraid of new things and like any other person they don’t want to lose their national identity. But they won’t, we are adapting just like the Italians, Irish, Germans, and every other immigrants has before us. We did not come to conquer, we came here to live.
Potential employers place a higher value on those who also speak Spanish. This is especially true in the public sector.
Spanish language is just going to be a way of life in the US. Better come to accept it. I know plenty of Latino kids born here, who still prefer to speak Spanish to their friends, etc. Plus no matter where you go you can’t escape Spanish. I’m trying to learn more than I do now, as we speak.
Because employers and recruiters tell them to.
I know many spanish people that HATE speaking spanish. Weird but true. Americans speak ENGLISH.
Because many of them speak Spanish when they don’t want anyone to understand them, and yes, many of them do speak Spanish in public to others they know full well don’t.
Where I live, I need to be able to speak Spanish. Though I am pretty sure other cities are a bit different. It’s frustrating but thank God I know Spanish enough to get around (I am half hispanic). But I swear to you, the Pizza Hut, the laundry matt, the gas station, signs on buildings, they’re all in Spanish. So where I live (south Fl), Spanish is Absolutely necessary.
I live in East Harlem (formerly called Spanish Harlem) and I don’t know spanish. I don’t care at all honestly, I don’t really like the sound of the language and I think if someone moves to a country where English is the official language, they should learn it. I prefer French especially b/c I hope to work in the fashion industry and it sounds pretty. But if I were to move to a Spanish speaking country, I would learn Spanish.
Because many assume that all Hispanics have some sort of exposure to Spanish, and that it is their preferred language. I’m not full Hispanic, but it is the predominate ethnicity within my closest relatives. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve had someone approach me and assume I speak Spanish, when in fact, me and my family only know English. For awhile, our letters in the mail kept coming in Spanish. In fact, today I had to go to the office at school and ask for an English copy of the letter I received in the mail, because the one they sent me was entirely in Spanish.
My family didn’t come here from south of the border, we’ve lived in America for generations, and are fully acquainted with American culture. It is so frustrating at times.
