Why do people call spanish a "dead end" language?
I want my kids to learn a foregin language and Chinese seems to be the most practical because it is the language of an up and coming country that is driving for 1st world status. When I see the spanish language comments they call it a "dead end" language because it is for the laborer ( from nations going no where). The only reason you need to learn spanish in the US is because the people that speak it can't figure out the english language. I am teaching my kids Chinese. I mow my own grass and clean my own house and don't eat fast food so we don't need spanish. I am offended by all the stores that have english and spanish signs and will not shop at most of them..we speak english in the US...If I go to a foreign country I learn the language to survive.. Am I wrong?

If your kids will engage in international commerce, Chinese seems a good bet over Spanish, but both languages offer access to multi-billion dollar markets.
If your kids will engage in domestic commerce, then Spanish would be infinitely more useful, again a multi-billion dollar market here in the US alone.
So… in terms of diversity of opportunity, Spanish would seem to win out.
Definitely encourage your kids to learn a second language. The one they can learn best is the one that will be most useful to them. When you reinforce stereotypes you limit your kid’s potential. Food for thought.
Good Luck!
No, you’re not wrong. In the sense of learning the lingo in another country to survive. I would at least take my children to a fast food restaurant every now and then. Kids meals are cool.
No idea, honestly I only answer your question to get the 2 extra points. It’s unfair, I was forced to learn english and honestly, learning english is as useful as a boat in the middle of the desert. I live a great life, been in private schools my whole life and everything, so do whatever you want with your kids, I just think chinese isn’t cool at all.
Where did you hear such a nonsense that Spanish is dead end. They speak Spanish in Spain, Sud America, Caribbean Centro America.
It’s the Chinese who eat fast food. You could be reported for posting this question and American is the country where they eat more fast food. What are you talking about?
i think you are entitled to your own opinion. I’m puerto rican but i don’t want to learn spanish because you are right we live in the u.s. sure it’s practical but no one can force you to do something you don’t want to do.
please answer mine it’s long but i spaced it out so it’s not boring and it’s very important to me.http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090628181653AAaVCD6
You are a stupid racist. Probably you do not know this but spanish is spoken in most of the continent. You are clearly an IGNORANT. We bilingual latin americans are far better than you and your kind. We speak 2 languages. Or probably you do not want to learn Spanish because it is hard. It is a hard language. Spanish is a romantic language spoken by many. You made me really mad.
That is because i have noticed in a crowd of people in New York, about 6 out of 10 people speak strictly spanish. And when China takes over, they will make spanish people stop speaking spanish and they most likely won’t.
