Why do I have to learn spanish in order to get the job? Immigrants come here they should learn english.?
I am a citizen. Lived here all my life. I should be able to work where ever I please. If I got the skills and qualify for the position. The job should be mine or any other citizen. If alot of the clients are hispanic. They should learn english. They wanted to come here because this is suppose to be the land of the free and they want to make a better life for themselfs. Learn the language. Why do I have to go out my way to learn their language. If I go to their country, Wouldn't I have to learn their language?

I agree, they should learn english. but they dont. they dont pay taxes. they don’t follow the law. they have a bunch of kids at the taxpayers’ expense, and they send all their money home. We support them. It is a crock and by golly i’m getting sick of it

Hispanics has surpassed Blacks as the number one minority in the U.S.. In Los Angeles, over 1/3 of city residents are Hispanic, many whom only speak Spanish. Many major cities in the U.S. mirrors L.A. demographics; that being the case, it is an asset to speak Spanish. I agree immigrants should learn English; however, this takes time. During this transitional stage, English speakers can help non English speakers by learning to speak in their language. Think about an elementary teacher who is teaching English to immigrants from South America. Would it not benefit the teacher and students alike to be able to understand one another because they speak a common language? When in college, many professors advised students to learn a foreign language. Foreign language skills is an asset in all sectors. I have friends who work in law firms and the firm made it very clear that they needed attorneys who speaks Mandarin Chinese and Japanese since the firm specialized in International law. I have friends who are social workers and speaking Spanish is a must.
I have traveled to both Central and South America. My Spanish is anything but good but you would be surprised at how many South Americans speak English. Think of it as a courtesy.
Remember, any family in the U.S. was at one time immigrants. It doesn’t matter if your family has been here for 5 generations or just one. Somewhere in your family tree, there was a time when your family members did not speak English.
Americans are the only ones who want to stay monolingual. Every other developed country, encourages their citizens to learn other languages. In Europe people speak at least 3 languages, in South America at least 2 and in Asia as well. Do not look at it as an imposition, but as an opportunity to become more cultured. Do not waste your energies upset about something that you can not change with a blink of your eyes. Instead learn hot to deal with the situation and get the best out of it.
