I believe that Spanish is much easier to learn than Chinese (Mandarin – though I think Cantonese is much harder)…of course, I have no real experience in Chinese. That’s an impression I get from listening to other people in the business of teaching languages.
You are right…Mandarin is the next boom language, the one that will be in most demand (according to the experts) in a few years.
But in the Western Hemisphere, yeah, Spanish has more speakers. You are much more likely to find friends to practice with nearby.
So, I guess, the real question is, which are YOU more interested in, assuming you don’t want to do both? Are you interested in Chinese culture? Could you see yourself travelling, maybe living for a while, or even settling in China? If you said yes to any of those, you should seriously consider Mandarin. On the other hand, if your answers are a resounding NO, and your only interest is learning the language that is most marketable, you will probably lose interest pretty quickly.
Spanish would be much easier since the Spanish alphabet is the same is ours, Chinese uses thousands of symbols.
My friend… learn spanish. It´s a looooooot easier and as the previous commenter said, it has the same alphabet (except for ¨ñ¨) and the sounds are easy to imitate since the correspondence between the letters and the way they are to be read is almost direct.
I´ll put you a link where you can explore a bit some things. This is european spanish, but it´s understood everywhere spanish is spoken. The first link is the Spanish homepage. The second one a guide to useful phrases and the last one contains cool (even street spanish phrases, lol) In the same third one, you can even listen to how they must me pronounced.

you gotta learn Spanish because it is the most spoken language in America and if you learn it ,me and you may chat in spanish hello from south america!
chinese it is easy i can speak it perfectly and i am only 10 years old.i can also speak a little english. spanish i do not know where is that country? benefits of knowing chinese is that i can talk to my parents and school teachers
I would pick spanish if I were you. Especially if you live in the US. But it’s up to you.
On thing you should really consider is how many opportunities you will get to practice.
If you interact (or will interact over the years) with a lot of Chinese speaking people, or Spanish speaking people it will have a huge impact on your ability to become fluent and stay fluent.
chinese will be very important in a future, i guess far future, cause i dont think china will put its culture around the world like the us did that easily, so now spanish is more helpful being second language in the US, whole latin america and u can learn fastly the other romance language, id go for that, apart from the fact that its a lot easier, except if you re planning to go to china
