The imperfect is descriptive and/or suggestive of an action taking place over time – which may be only a few minutes or much longer.
Leía el periódico cuando le llamé – he was reading the paper (imp.) when I called (pret.) him.
Vivíamos en Flórida – we lived in Florida / we used to live in Florida – imp.
There’s plenty of info. on the internet.
Past tense is for events that occurred exactly once in the past.
Imperfect is for events that occurred for an indefinite period in the past.
basically the imperfect corresponds to 3 kinds of statements in english:
(a) ones like ‘i was working’ (progressive past tense, i.e., was/were + Ving, V = verb)
(b) ones like ‘i knew, i loved, i thought, i lived’ (simple past from a verb that describes a state or an ongoing process)
(c) ones like ‘i worked and worked’ (simple past describing a constant repetition of an action
whereas the simple past corresponds to:
(d) ones like ‘i killed, i kissed, i broke, that is, simple past of a verb that describes an action that took place and was finished and done with.
this will help u 70-90% of the time. there will be times when u’ll still be confused, but if u understand these four rules clearly, u will be ok most of the time, and pass the typical exam.
pasado imperfecto = acción pasada continua, repetida, habitual,…etc.
ejemplo:
Cuando era adolecente, iba a la playa todos los domingos.
pasado = acción pasada ya terminada.
ejemplo:
Cuando tenia cinco años, fui a Disney World.
