They told us in school about 7 years.
But there are newer methods today.
If you take four basic courses, the equivalent of four semesters of University, and that depends on the time and effort that you put into it, then go live immersed in the language for about four months, you can call yourself relatively fluent. 8 months, and it should stick for a long time.
But a lot depends on the time and effort you put in, your facility, your talent, and how well you actually apply it.
You COULD become fluent in about a year with good effort and the time and opportunity to live immersed.
well. that all depends on the person. foe example i do spanish as a class in school and i find the languge sort of easy. i think if your really into learning in and you enjoy it. you’ll learn it lot faster.
For me it was about 5 years before I was comfortably fluent in Spanish. I studied a lot and practiced hard from the ages of 12-17, and when I entered college I majored in it and was already able to take classes taught IN Spanish. The great deal of cognates helps a lot. I’ve been studying Russian for five years, and I’m not quite at that level yet.
