It doesn't matter what you talk about as long as he/she isn't using complex sentences. I speak spanish sometimes to my gf and she's understanding it the more I keep talking to her in spanish. Plus I think that's the most realistic way of learning a new language. That's how I learned to speak English. If you can teach yourself to sing a dozen or so songs, it will really help your pronunciation and rhythm when you speak it. There is no point of learning a language if they do not teach you how to actually speak it.
