try reading "the little prince" in spanish "El principito" it is easy to read and not long at all. "Cuentos de la Selva" is another one with short stories, really simple but not boring.
Marcelino, pan y vino is one we read in highschool spanish class, also poems by borges are a good way to practice. in college spanish we read Como Agua para Chocolate. hope that gives you some ideas!
Cien Anos De Soledad by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
This book and the language used, by its nature forces the reader to think and form a mental image of the descriptions being read.
Buena suerte.
I liked a lot books by Eduardo Mendoza. Sin noticias de Gurb is very funny, the language is very good without being too dificult.
