It depends on what you want. My favourite ones are:
Jorge Ibargüengoitia: "Los pasos de López" – a novel where the author shows a different version of the independence and jokes about it.
Jorge Ibargüengoitia: "Instrucciones para vivir en México" A collection of short essays written for a mexican newspaper where the author critics and makes fun of several aspects of the mexican society.
Augusto Monterroso: "La oveja negra y otras fábulas" a short collection of fables where the Author critics some aspects of the society (This is not a mexican author but lived in Mexico many years and the book is in spanish)
Carlos Fuentes: "Aura" a short novel I really never understood.
Carlos Fuentes: "La región más transparente" In my own opinion this is an novel of the Mexico City in first half of the XX century. several (different and at the same time connected) stories of people from different social levels living in Mexico City
Ángeles Mastretta: "Arráncame la vida" A love novel taking place in Puebla in the 1930s. The most expensive mexican movie is based in this novel.
Octavio Paz: "El Laberinto de la soledad" In this book several essays are gathered and the author tries to explain and critic the Mexican society and Mexico itself in the 50s.
José Emilio Pacheco: "Las Batallas en el Desierto" A short novel where the main character is Carlos, a boy living in Mexico City. I loved that book.
José Emilio Pacheco: "El principio del Places" An excellent collection of short stories.
