Was Portuguese really easy to learn after mastering Spanish?
I have a B.A. in Spanish, and am working on my M.A. in Latin American literature at the moment. I also speak French as I lived in Paris for nearly three years, and I just got myself a book/CD called "Teach Yourself Portuguese," and am really enjoying it. So far, it's been fairly easy to pick up, but I am curious, have any of you done Portuguese after learning Spanish and how hard or easy was it? Do you ever mix the two?

Also, if you are going to learn portuguese, you should know that portuguese and brazilian portuguese are quite different, so don’t mix them (some sites just say "portuguese" when it’s actually brazilian)…

Not really; if anything, learning Portuguese when you already know Spanish can be a bit of a disadvantage. This is becuase the languages appear so similar but are, in fact, very different on many levels: for one thing, there are a huge number of "false friends": e.g. acordarse means "to remember" in Spanish, but "acordar-se" means "to wake up" in Portuguese. "Pasear" means "to walk, go for a walk" in Spanish; in Portuguese, "passear" means "to enjoy oneself".
Tenses and pronouns – which look as though they should be the same – are often used quite differently in the two languages. "Me dijo que me fuera" – "He told me to go away" becomes "Disse-me para me ir emboira" in Portugese.

The accent is very different to Spanish. The pronunciation is as hard as French. So the answer is no.
mmm… so spanish and portuguese are very different I’m spanish and when I was in portugal last summer I couldn’t understand anything. Italian and Spanish could be similar, but portuguese and sapanish not.
