Has anyone used Rosetta Stone language learning software and were you pleased with it? I am considering purchasing the Spanish software. I have tried the rote memory CD's and tapes and I can say the basic phrases, but I still don't feel like I really have a handle on the Spanish language. Rosetta Stone seems like a good idea, if it is actually as good as the TV commercial says.
Please give me some answers from anyone who has used the software for Spanish, or if not for Spanish, then for another language even. Is it fun to use the software or does it feel like work? The commercials on TV make it seem like more fun than a barrel of monkeys to learn a language using Rosetta Stone. Is this true, or just an exaggerated sales pitch?
Thanks so much for serious responses.
I am currently studying Spanish at a university, and this fall I will be in Spanish 301. I have a pretty good grasp of the Spanish language and was wondering whether it would be smart for me to begin learning Portuguese. I definitely want to learn Portuguese at some point in my life, but starting to learn it now would open up opportunities for me to study abroad in Portugal in the near future. This is a dream of mine because Portugal is a beautiful country and I love the language. I want to continue my studies in Spanish, as I live in the U.S. and Spanish is a useful language to know here. So, giving up Spanish in order to start studying Portuguese is not an option. Because Spanish and Portuguese are similar, I am afraid that I would start getting them mixed up. Do you think this is a valid fear? Or do I have enough experience with Spanish that I would have little trouble keeping them separate?
Does anyone know any website that teaches Spanish Language for a decent price...????
I would like to study Spanish language in Latin america , i need a good web site about that .
I have found a teacher, when I asked how the course would be they said, we will pick a topic and have a good conversation.
The only problem is I CANNOT have a conversation in Spanish. I don't know enough to form my sentences on my own. I could understand most of what the teacher says if they spoke very slowly.
What do I do? I understand best when reading spanish, as talking to friends on an instant messaging service such as AIM, they will talk in spanish and i can respond back in english. if that gives a more accurate estimation of my knowledge of the spanish language.
how should i be learning?

I am in 10th grade in new york. I took french and now regret it because I have learned to love the spanish language. I work at a restaurant with many spanish and peruvian people. They speak spanish all the time and I feel left out and curious. I love the sound of spanish and I know a little bit. I don't know where to start. I would love to learn the language and be fluent. I would study hard, I'm not looking for a quick fix. How do I find resources outside of school to learn spanish?

I've read some of the answers about latin people and spanish language in the usa and I wouldn't have imagined how some people there are so racist. The USA is an empire, like it or not, and you want everyone and everything to revolve around you. Why would you learn Spanish, French or German since in Spain, France or Germany you will speak English and natives will answer you in English. Of course, in the USA you must speak English and English is widely spoken everywhere
but, what's wrong with learn another different language and use it? Learning another language helps you to understand another cultures and be more open-minded. Don't expect immigrant to learn English immediately and forget their own roots. Nobody is forcing you to speak Spanish but you should know that speak the second language spoken in the USA could help you a lot. Do you want English to be the language of mankind? The world has learned English; although the truth is that in 2050 the USA will be the most Spanish-speaking country in the world.
PD: know that many us americans are open-minded and tolerant
Do not bother to write offensive and racist comments
To Whitney:
Please, express yourself I didn't mean that. It's just I don't wanna people to write offensive comments against latins or immigrants.
sorry!! please tell me what you think about this issue, I'm really interested in this
To mysterious maddness:
Don't be mad for that because in all of countries of the world is the same. You need English of course, but if you know another language much better. In Europe most people is bilingual, so it's almost obligatory to speak English and we aren't mad for that
To Bret:
I think you misunderstood me. I totally agree with you- latins must speak English and I don't think that everybody in USA should speak Spanish. I don't know what happens in Quebec but in Europe, American and English people always speak in English and if someone tell them something in the native language of the country, they get angry; believe me, it's that, I'm not wrong, English-speaking countries want the world to communicate in English
To safety pin:
Worldwide nowadays the term Latin refers to the inhabitants of Latin Europe, which draws from the culture left there by the Roman Empire, thus including the use of a Romance language, and Roman Catholicism. The term "Latin" may refer to the inhabitants of Latin America, which was colonized by different Latin European countries. Much of the population of Latin America are descendants of "Latin" peoples of Europe, and are either of pure or mixed ancestry
