I personally find the accents of Mexico and Ecuador to be very clear, whereas the accent in Carribbean countries such as Puerto Rico tends to be more difficult.

What are your experienes, for those of you who have studied Spanish as a second language?

Right now im in mexico and going to a language institute for learning spanish. When I watch movies in spanish should i put english subtitles up or no. Im staying here for roughly a little more than two months, if anyone has any tips i would appreciate it.

Has anyone every done a spanish language course in Playa del Carmen run by Academia Columbus. If so, what was your experience like - lessons, accomodation, safety, beach etc. and would you recommend it?

Can anyone recommend a good Spanish immersion program? I am open to different countries, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Panama, etc... Been to Mexico 9 times now though, so would like to try somewhere different.

I live in a sanctuary city in Minnesota, with a large illegal population. They have marches in town, marching for amnesty, for white people to "get out" even. My town is quite devise, with people from all over the world, they get quite confused by the whole illegal Mexican in America thing. I speak a little Spanish from years of working with friends from Mexico. But lately it seems like it's crazy around here! At the march last summer they held up signs saying "Start to learn Spanish" and "This is OUR land" And even "Whitey go back to Europe!". Wow! And this is Minnesota! I've got no problems with the hard working friends I work with that happen to be from Mexico, but these others, what is the deal? They demand we learn Spanish in Minnesota? Just because the stubborn ones refuse to learn English?
To: Cheesus, you sound like the "Brown Nazi" radical nut jobs in my once nice town! Again, this is MINNESOTA! WE WERE NEVER A PART OF MEXICO! I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO LEARN SPANISH UP HERE! UNLESS YOU ARE SAYING YOU SUPPORT SOME KIND OF MOVEMENT THAT IS SIMILAR TO THE NAZIS OR SOVIETS!
EVERYONE! Please report Heath! He is using racial slurs! I did not use any slurs in my question and do not want any in the answers I get! The term "whitey scum" is very insulting to people!

I really want to learn Spanish, but I don't have any motivation for learning the language. Could you please give me some reasons why I should learn Spanish? I know that there are a lot of people that speak Spanish in the world, and it could be very useful to learn, but whenever I think of Mexico, a Spanish speaking country, I think of a very poor area. I also think of the desert, and the desert does not turn me on as much as a rich city with lots of tall, beautiful buildings.

I'm forced to take a spanish class at my community college in order to have credit for a 4 year college later one.
But I hate the language, it's so....bleh. French and Italian have at least some style and a romantic touch to them, but spanish is dull and way too close to the language english. Although the class will be somewhat easy not simple as heck but yeah, I'm afraid I'll get so bored of it. I won't have any use for it later but my community college doesn't offer anything else other than japanese and that is too difficult for me.
What can I do to force myself to actually semi-like the language? I just...idk I hate it. I took one in high school and I hated it! No offense, but things I've learned about mexico is not that interesting and that is ALL my spanish teacher based the lessons on. The holidays were ok to learn, but overall I did not like it.
I love places that had amazing history or stories and such, like Egypt or Greece had for example. If there was something related to spanish that can help me actually want to learn the language, I'll learn it. But if not, I'm gonna have to find a totally different community college D: <

Pleaseeeeeeeee don't be annoying and call me a racist, idk how you can though but people have a skill to blame you for anything anywhere anytime, I just don't like the language, but I need something that will make me WANT to actually learn it. Anything?!

Over half the land that is today the United States of America was once part of the Spanish Empire. A huge chunk of land was also part of Mexico. With the increasing number of Hispanics in the US and the increasing call for bilinguals, why do Americans remain so reluctant to learn the language?

I really want to learn spanish and ive been taking spanish classes freshman - junior year in high school (im a junior now) and i have learned quite a bit but its not enough to have an actual conversation with someone. do you think it is a good idea to go to mexico this summer (around 3 months) with family or though a foreighn exchange program so i can learn the language better?? any other ideas??

I saw a news report saying most American public schools are making Spanish mandatory. It seems like if our kids are going to have to support half of Mexico, Mexicans should have to learn English
I guess in the future when American kids are robbed in Spanish, it will be safer to know the language.

1. Where are you from?
2. What Spanish do you study? Spanish from Spain, Mexico...?

A simple question. I'm just curious.

I'll give 10 points. I always do :)

I just spent the last 5 weeks in Mexico studying Spanish. I am able to understand the language fairly well through listening, and one of the main things that I need is oral speaking practice. I know that I also lack in vocabulary, as anyone would at this particular stage in learning the language. I am very capable of writing spanish, only me cuesta trabajo hablar en espanol. It takes me a longer time to spit the words out.

I live in Columbus, Ohio where there isn't a very large Spanish speaking population. Any ideas on how to keep practicing, or any ideas on a second job or activity that I could pick up? I am really interested and dedicated to becoming bilingual, so I would appreciate serious responses.

For example is the Spanish spoken by people from Mexico different from the Spanish spoken by people from Spain?

Hi, i'm from Argentina (a South America country, not Mexico) and i want to improve my English skills and what's better than talking with a real American? I handle Skype but i don't have any problem using another programme to communicate.
The deal it's something like this: talk in english about whatever, if you want to know about my culture, my way of living, whatever, i don't have any problems, i'm doing this because i want to enter the English Translator university the next year and one of the best ways is this.
Maybe you are interest on talking Spanish too and we can talk in both languages, you help me, i help you. I think it's a win win situation :)
Thanks all to read the thread, and if you have any doubt, just send me a message :)
Thanks a lot!

My husband just moved with me to Mexico and he doesn´t speak spanish so we agreed I will teach him but can´t find lessons or a book on internet that helps me
Where can I find on internet a book about spanish lessons that guide me about what to teach him?

when they see his picture (he is wearing his priest uniform in the picture). He said this would happen every time in North American English TV talk shows. But on Spanish TV talk shows, they invite him to talk about his book because they respect priests there. As a result, his book is a best seller in Mexico, but does not do well in English speaking America. What do you think about this kind of discrimination?
His book is a self-help book about how to have a lasting marriage.
Oops, my wife just let me know that the priest is Cuban.
by the way, his book is translated into both Spanish and English. But he is a popular priest in Spanish speaking countries.

In my husbands family there are many who have lived here for over 20 years but still do not speak english! Then they have the balls to get mad at me for not learning spanish so I can speak with them! Is any one else sick and tired of people coming here and not speaking the language? That would be like me moving to Mexico and saying "Well I am here now speak english"
question should have read "Why do some hispanics" rather than hispanics. Sorry!

I have no problem with learning something new but when the assume that I should learn it just to communicate with them that is where I have a problem.

I'm going on vacation to Mexico, and I know basic spanish+ a little extra. Are there any tips for having conversations with people?

My sister is not fuent in English; the prices of computers in USA area appealing to her than in Mexico. She wants to buy the item but does not know how to convert to spanish all the pre-installed software that came with the computer. Thanks

I can't go to Mexico because I live in the United States. I'm only thirteen years old, so I cannot go out of the country as of right now. Are there any websites, free programs, etc. where I can learn Spanish? <3

This is an stereotype that really bothers me ... I speak spanish and some other languages; When somebody ask me if I'm from Mexico... I get really pissed

Any good spanish speaking shows I can watch? Im not a big fan of novelas but thats all that basically show on the spanish shows. And any good books in spanish I could read? (Not "how to speak spanish" kinds of books, more like novels written in spanish). Im giong to be going to Costa Rica within the next two years hopefully and want to improve the spanish I learned in high school
*oops I said we are freshman in highschool, I meant to write freshman in college.
Thanks everyone for your advice, but I was looking more into any specific movies, novelas, tv show, books... Especially books around the middle school level :]

**Please note that my Spanish class in learning Spanish as it is spoken in Mexico and the surrounding countries, not Spain. I know there are some differences. Thanks.

How would you write these sentences in Spanish?

"She was lost in the forest."
"The woman comforted her."
"The wild ox tried to fight."
"They named the dresses after her."
"Nobody knew they were going to get married."

Thank you so much! :)
Please no translators, like Google Translate.
@CutiePie21, I just said I didn't like translators... right up there ^

Maybe a school in Mexico? Good price, secure, some place nice, close to the beach or so. Thanks!

I know many of you must be getting tired of me!
I'm SO sorry!
One more question after this and I'm DONE!

Juan and Pati get a divorce. While Pati was directing one of her shows, she got into an argument with one of her student, who turned out to be a serial killer and poisoned her. While on his way to Pati’s funeral from Mexico, Juan’s plane crashes.

Sorry, and thank you again!
