I live in a sanctuary city in Minnesota, with a large illegal population. They have marches in town, marching for amnesty, for white people to "get out" even. My town is quite devise, with people from all over the world, they get quite confused by the whole illegal Mexican in America thing. I speak a little Spanish from years of working with friends from Mexico. But lately it seems like it's crazy around here! At the march last summer they held up signs saying "Start to learn Spanish" and "This is OUR land" And even "Whitey go back to Europe!". Wow! And this is Minnesota! I've got no problems with the hard working friends I work with that happen to be from Mexico, but these others, what is the deal? They demand we learn Spanish in Minnesota? Just because the stubborn ones refuse to learn English?
To: Cheesus, you sound like the "Brown Nazi" radical nut jobs in my once nice town! Again, this is MINNESOTA! WE WERE NEVER A PART OF MEXICO! I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO LEARN SPANISH UP HERE! UNLESS YOU ARE SAYING YOU SUPPORT SOME KIND OF MOVEMENT THAT IS SIMILAR TO THE NAZIS OR SOVIETS!
EVERYONE! Please report Heath! He is using racial slurs! I did not use any slurs in my question and do not want any in the answers I get! The term "whitey scum" is very insulting to people!
I live in the u.s . My parents are saying that its better to take spanish because its the second spoken language in america and that most jobs look for people who speak spanish?? I want to take french because i want to be different from everyone else and i heard colleges like it more. which language is better to take? Thank you
If I were to learn a 3rd language which one would give me the most options for jobs?
I am currently studying spanish portuguese and italian language, aswell as culture, politics, history and litreature.
I was wondering , apart from teaching, what jobs would i be suited to? Would being fluent in all 3 languages be an advantage for any particular job/ attractive to a certain type of emplpyer?
What kind of job could i get from a BA in spanish, portuguese and italian?

Hello!
I will be taking my exam (IB Year 2 Ab Initio Spanish = 2 Years of Spanish at a beginner level) this May and I am kinda stressed - our teacher has not really taught us a lot
I am trying to find something on the internet which would have basic vocabulary words arranged in topics (school, jobs, a city, eating, etc) so that I could test myself/ study. Any suggestions/ past experience/ useful tips?
Any help would be appreciated!
Thank you!
I am fairly young, and live in the US. So yes, I speak English very fluently.
The language I know the most words/grammar/structure in besides English is Norwegian (speak it at home sometimes with grandparents).
I also am learning Spanish.
I know at least one word from all of these languages:
English
Norwegian
Spanish
Swedish
Danish
Icelandic
German
French
Ukrainian
Russian
Korean
I would like to learn a language in the list I just listed (besides English, Norwegian, and Spanish). What would you say? Also, consider the language being useful for jobs, or just plain out interesting.

I'm a sophomore in high school and speak English, Greek, and Spanish, and adore foreign language. (I've been studying Spanish for 3 years... it's not nearly as great as my English or Greek, but I pick up foreign language rather quickly.)
What's the best way to improve language skills? I'm very interested in further studying the Greek language, but it's so rare around here, and only my family speaks it. I listen to the music, watch the Greek news when I can, read books... any other ideas? There aren't any classes I can take around here.
Also, I was wondering what types or jobs there are for those who study foreign languages. (Other than the most obvious professor/teacher.) I know there are also translators between countries, too, though you have to be appointed by the state. My GPA isn't of the best ranking-- I'm absolutely horrible with math and the sciences. I do consider myself bright, though, and want a professional career to reflect that. Any ideas?
Thanks for your help!
I'd love to go to Japan and speak it if I ever get a job there (which is slim, since i doubt they have vet jobs there). I want some websites with learning Japanese easily, because I'm already learning Spanish, so I want an easy way for a website to teach me Japanese. Not fast, because there's no such way. A website where it's easy to understand Japanese and learn it.
Hi, So pretty much I have ALOT of free time on my hands and am interested in learning spanish;
not 100% perfect but Just enough to communicate with say a customer at like a store or something, I wanna learn enough so that when I apply for jobs, I will actually have a valuable asset.
Any suggestions/tips?
After all they came HERE we didn't go there.
Management at my fathers company recently informed there Bosses that if they wanted to advance within the company they would be required to learn Spanish. One man stood up and asked Why can't THEY learn English?.
WHY should US Citizens be forced to learn Spanish? Last time I checked we didn't go to Mexico to steal Jobs and I'm sure if we did they wouldn't be learning English to accomidate us.
I saw a sign advertising "Learn to speak English" geared towards the spanish-speaking population....I wonder if I could do this on the side. It would make me feel a whole lot better about Mexicans not knowing how to speak English while they live here, that at least they're trying...what do you guys think?
I don't mean to sound racist or anything. I just meant maybe I could teach English to those who need it for their jobs, citizenship, ect....
would I also have to teach people to write ? This sign I saw advertised to learn (English) for an hour per person.
cause they use English in a lot in their jobs
What types are of jobs are there for Americans who do not speak spanish? Will it be hard to get a job and work permit? What type of pay can I expect? Have a 10 year old son. Are there any bi-lingual schools he can attend until he learns spanish? I am currently married to a Panamanian (seperated). He will assist me with the move but I would still like some other opinions. Thanks any advice will be appreciated.
And yet Spanish only speaking people are hired. Now that's Discrimination if you ask me. My daughter has been turned down for several jobs in Florida, simply because she doesn't speak spanish. It's simply just wrong! We live in America! Land of the English speaking individuals! We shouldn't have to speak a different language when our national language is ENGLISH! For those who come into this country, they should be required to speak English, and that's all there is to it.
I am encouraging my children to learn spanish because so many jobs now require you to speak both!
How do you feel should the US continue to have 2 languages? Canada does and other countries....
IT costs alot to teach the spanish kids entering the public school system english and alot of schools dont offer the english kids spanish! but it keeps them from getting jobs.
If Mcdonalds can hire a bilingual teen over one that speaks only english you know who will get hired.
Ive been speaking fluent spanish for a few years now and I would like to know what I can do as far as jobs or social service with a spanish background.
I'm doing an extra credit assignment, and I need to know jobs that would involve being able to speak spanish, like if you need to speak to get hired. I would love it if you could include some websites, and i you could give a short job description. Thanks!
If they DON'T learn Spanish they will lose their jobs. WHY? Isn't this racist for them to be forced to do something which should NOT be part of their job description? We are AMERICANS and we speak ENGLISH! If the illegal aliens don't want to know HOW to speak English, then that is their problem, not ours!
Chiq. I have SPOKEN to the teachers who are being forced. This is coming directly from the horses mouth. Your comments were very rude also.
I don't get it.
I'm a refugee from Somalia. My parents worked their butts off to get us Visa's here. We all learned english and tried our best to get jobs. Today we are fluent in english, have houses, and own jobs.
So why make the country learn spanish?
Can't they learn english?
Other immigrants from other countries learn english before getting here or take classes when here.
Hey! I already speak French fluently and have some experience in learning Spanish, but I'm looking for a way to really learn it, so that I can go to South America and live there for a while. I know that the best way to learn would be to just go there, but the jobs I will be applying for require some level of fluency, so I need to be prepared beforehand. Any ideas? Some people have suggested watching movies and learning songs by heart. Has this worked for anyone?
as simple as it sounds like. i've heard many disputes that include the language. ok so we had to learn english enable to communicate. why don't you try to learn spanish. if you complain so such that hispanics are taking your jobs. maybe because a bilingual person is more usefull to the company, it will make the company more productive? why aren't you willing to try????
i don't mean it in a disrespecfull way. am just curious to know what you gux think. since we live among hispanics..
I mean we don't have to but it seems more and more importent for us to learn Spanish since they are coming from the south and pushing North. I'm kind of learning the language right now so. But I'm wondering why should we teach ourselves spanish. Why son't they just learn english if they want to come here so bad. If I was going to Latin America for what ever reason I'd just learn spanish for my own and their benifit. Immigration needs to be controlled before America is destroyed.
I agree Crystal, it's too bad political corectness keeps people from even voiceing their opinion
the reason why the number of spanish speaking people has grown is becuase over the last 2 decades they jumped the borders and all had 40 kids.
we should all listen to shelton he's a smart guy
I blame employers also for using jobs as bate for them to run over here. Everyone wants a worker for half price. These people need to either learn english or leave.
I Just wanted to know. I mean, I know in the U.S learning Spanish isn't mandatory, but it might as well be. America has to always print everything thats in English, in Spanish also. I Just want to know why we virtually have to comply to Hispanic needs. They want us to learn to speak Spanish, but do they realize that they are in America? Why shouldn't they be the ones to learn our language because they are in your country. A lot of jobs here in California want you to be bi-lingual just to be hired. If the U.S is going to virtually force us to learn other languages to keep up with the other countries (gosh, how to say this; other countries' schools make it mandatory that students
have to learn more than one language, and the U.S doesn't, so they are trying to "make us smarter" by forcing another language upon us.)
Why should we adhere to Hispanic needs? If they're going to make us learn more languages, we need to lean French, Spanish and other languages too. Not just Spanish. I feel this way because I feel that some immigrants (some illegal) feel that we Americans need to learn to speak Spanish. So, my question is, why should be adhere and comply to what they want, when they should be the ones learning the English language since they're not in their home country? I have made it a goal of mine to learn Spanish just so I have a better chance of getting a job. I mean, its just, I feel almost forced to learn Spanish or else I am not likely to get a job. I plan on going to Mexico to learn Spanish fluently, but I wouldn't go over there in a mindset that the Hispanic in Mexico need to learn English! Thats disrespectful to go to another countries and force your wants upon its people.
So, tell me your thoughts on this....
And no, NOT ALL Hispanics feel this way, and I didn't say that all of
them did. If you read the question carefully, it says SOME.
I was in Argentina this past month and I totally fell in love with it. I loved the culture, the people, weather, everything. My question is, is their any jobs for an American who can't speak any Spanish in this country? I have a masters degree from a pretty good university here in the states so I'm wondering if its possible for me to teach at a International American University down in BA (Lincoln University). Are these jobs competitive? Any other ideas? Thanks!
PS- I'm a 25 year old male, if that makes a difference.
My husband and I are wanting to learn to speak Spanish fluently. Not only is it somewhat of a life goal (to be fluent in another language), but both of our jobs would benefit from it. I know the best way is to listen, read, and try to talk in Spanish. But of course you have to have somewhat of a base line to get started. What programs or any other tools have you had success with?
Many jobs in the City of Los Angeles require one to speak Spanish, but, they cannot refuse you if you do not speak English?
They can refuse to hire you if you cannot speak Spanish, but, cannot refuse to hire you if you cannot speak English.
Where is the ACLU on this?
If you can't speak English, and and don't get hired, it is discrimination. But if you don't speak Spanish, and don't get hired, you can do nothing.
