I'm half Hispanic and half Caucasian, and for some reason I feel like it's my responsibility to learn the language since I have the blood in me. (Not to mention here in the U.S. it's a dominant, beautiful language) But I have two questions:
One, where can I learn Spanish? Like, where can I get free complete lessons online? No Rosetta Stone, for I hear that it's fake and just waste of money.
And two, what if I marry a white male in my future? Will it be wrong to make my children learn Spanish as a first language, or will it be harder for them in their future?
♥♥♥When I was a little kid it was my first language! But when I got put into kindergarden I entered a school where they only spoke english and so I guess i just stopped talking spanish slowlly.. I can talk spanish just not perfect so now i think i sound **weird** talking it how can i get over it?? Because when I have kids i want them 2 speak spanish! LOL please dont say anything like just get over it... its hard :'( ♥♥♥
I grew up learning both Chinese and English. Chinese is my first language, but I started learning English in nursery school by age 2, so now, I excel in English more than Chinese, even though I still only speak Chinese with my parents. Why is it that my English surpassed Chinese? Also, does bilingualism have anything to do with learning other languages? I started learning Spanish in school in 6th grade, and I'm a junior now, but people are always surprised to learn I'm the top of my advanced class when there are French/German speakers who struggle a bit. I go to an int'l school and alot of my classmates are bilingual, so I don't get why it seems so hard for them to learn Spanish, or even French. My Chinese teachers have always said I learned Chinese really fast as a kid. I love learning languages and want to learn French in college, but I'm just wondering, are language learning skills genetic or innate?
Sorry I asked more than 1 q. but just answer as fully as possible. Thanks!
I go to a special high school that I love, but we are required to have our two years of foreign language complete by the beginning of our senior year. If I don't get the credits I'll get kicked-out. My counselor told me to take the Spanish CLEP since Spanish is my first language. However, I've never studied Spanish grammar and I'm scared that there will be a lot of grammar on the exam.
American Sign Language (ASL)
I have been study Spanish little more deeper and I start to realize Spanish's grammar is almost or some similar as (ASL)'s grammar.
My point is those people who speak Spanish and those Deaf people in American don't live together and how in the world did Spanish and (ASL) grammar is almost so similar?
Why is that? or How did that happened?
To let you know that I am Deaf and my first language is (ASL).
Thanks.
@ Californiamama: You said it true, but the question how did in the world Mexician or Spain get almost same as in ASL?
I ask because ASL is in America and those people speak Spanish don't know Sign Language and how in the world we almost have same grammar?
@ JH ♥ ASL * 愛万多* Happy A: Yes, I know ASL history, but how did Spanish get so similar with ASL? And yes ASL is coming from French.
And I am thinking that English language is not pure language? Because those many other countries are so smiliar and how in the world did ASL are so similar like their languages?
Sorry, folks, I should have write English proper, but my mind is on ASL now.
I'm fluent in the language (its my first language) but I think its one of those things that doesn't translate well. I don't think people will know what I mean by "hablar sucio"
Spanish is my first language and I really want to learn Portuguese before I go to brazil in two years. Do you think it's possible to learn the basics before then.
Well, I'm 14 and I live in Thailand. We have Thai as our first language and now I'm learning English and I think I'm okay with it. So I want to start the third language between Spanish and German with self-learning or online lesson. Which one is easier and well-known? What should I choose? This language may be useful in my future because I want to be a translator.
Please answer thanks
Thanks to everyone!!
Spanish in Thailand is not very popular as German or French. The most popular is Chinese but I don't want to learn an asian language. Can anyone answer me that on the internet, which one is used more often. I always find that in Youtube, every one just like to speak German.
My first language is french, and I have been living in Texas for almost 2 years now. I have family in Mexico however, and speak, read, and write in spanish better than many "Mexican Americans" (or Tejanos, as many in Texas identify themselves, particularly those whose families have lived here for several generations)
It is insulting to me when they often refuse to respond to my spanish in kind, even though they speak it amongst themselves, and even more so when after I leave the room, I overhear them say 'Those gringos come here and can't speak spanish.'
If it's a tejano(a) who doesn't speak much (or any) spanish I don't mind speaking english with them. I do live in America after all. But when it's someone who can speak spanish, but they seem to think that one has to be of Mexican descent to be 'allowed' to speak it .. to me that's reverse discrimination.
!Ideas por favor?
Move where Rainbow .. i'm closer to Mexico City than Dallas, so proximity to Mexico isn't the problem. I'm here for school, at the best one so close to the border. I'm just frustrated at how people can be so close-minded. When was the last time an American told a 'foreigner' something along the lines of 'I don't understand your accent, so don't speak english with me.' Seems contradictory eh?
I wish I were in your shoes Casey .. me it seems the more I improve, the more suspicious they're becoming of me. =(
Good point Lovely .. and I can speak spanglish pretty well. But since I grew up speaking french, and not franglais, to me mixing two languages in the same sentence is frowned upon and a sign of lazyness.
lol Ducks .. maybe I should wear a doorag that says "Hablame espanol cabrones" .. lol
eh Jasmine .. that is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. If I didn't speak english how could I have written all that I have?
I'm an American, but English isn't my first language. I was just curious--which language should be required study in the US schools, English or Spanish? Thanks.
Thanks for all answers!
it would be very interesting for me to know people's opinions about this. you see, even though i was born, raised in America and i have never been anywhere outside of America, Spanish was my first language! My parents only spoke to me in Spanish when i was very little. I didnt start speaking English until i started school, when i was 5. Then English came so naturally to me and i never had any trouble learning or speaking it. i am proud of my heritage and my first language(Spanish). i never want to forget my Spanish, even when i move to the UK someday. I speak it everyday as well as English!! So what does it sound like to you when you hear someone speak Spanish???
I am mexicano, I apologize for my broken Inglish and misspelled words,
My first language is Spanish and I am an undocumented Immigrant who would like to become citizen of both countries.
My first language is Spanish, but I learned English at age 4 living in the US. I want to learn a language online over the course of this year, but I want to consider which is easier, which accent I can achieve, which is more practical, etc.
So please, pros and cons of learning Italian or French, and while you're at it, any free sites to study either language that you might recommend?
Spanish was my first language, and I've been to Puerto Rico before, and i loved it, therefore, I guess I wont have any problems with the language and all that. I know courses are in Spanish and that is even better for me.
i am going to use Rosetta stone, im a fast learner and my first language was english
My first language was spanish but i know how to read, write, and speak in both english and spanish. I want to learn how to speak, read, and write in italian since my great grandfather was from sicily italy and i was wondering if already knowing spanish would help or make it easier/faster.
I want to learn something new and I was wondering which language would be easier to learn?
Portuguese or Italian?
Spanish was my first language so I know it pretty well and English is my second one but I kind of want to learn to speak another language just because I know it helps out when your older as well.
Which one do you consider I should take?
Thanks!
I want to learn another language. English is my first language and I have a decent grasp of the Spanish language. I know a little bit of Italian from elementary school. I plan on using Rosetta stone to learn a language. Should I go with Italian because it is so close to Spanish and I already know a bit of Italian. (very basic, mostly food, animals, and colors) I think Arabic Farsi and Chinese would be more useful than Italian, but they have a different alphabet which doesn't appeal to me.
I'm in University and I plan on taking an introduction to Spanish course next year.
I took French in High School and did well (I got in the 90s) and my first language was Italian.
So I'm assuming it will be easy for me to learn Spanish, especially an intro course?
I wanna learn german through internet because there is no school of that language here... I dont know it's possible to learn a language on internet? well I speak spanish as first language, I learned my english in school.. of languages
My parents are from Argentina, and Spanish was my first language until I was 2... but living in America I lost my accent. But I can still speak Spanish pretty well, except my grammar is off because I was never formally educated on the language, I just learned by ear... My parents would speak to me in Spanish and I would respond in English.
So, is Italian easy to learn if the person already knows Spanish?
,people speak basque as their first language. This is one reason many people in the basque region believe they should separate from spain and become an independent country.Which would be an argument of supporters of this idea? A.Boundaries once settled should remain in place. B.Economic considerations will promote national unity. C.Political boundaries should reflect cultural characteristics. D.Natural boundaries should determine political boundaries.
Ok, our first language is spanish, but when we are in the house we (my bro, sis, and I) talk English! So, I'm wondering if I should talk to her in English or Spanish, she's 6! I don't want her to forget spanish! She speaks spanish very good, but I'm afraid that she will forget! My bro is 12, so I don't worry much about him, he knows alot of spanish! My mom and dad work and my mom is here in the morning (when we are at school) and my dad is here in the afternoon(when we come back from school), but he sleeps becuase he works at midnight!

I'm in my fourth year of spanish in highschool and I can speak and write it pretty well.
My issue is when I'm listening to someone who's first language is spanish, its really hard for me to keep up.
It just seems like they talk so fast...
How can I get better at understanding what theyre saying?
I'm fluent in Spanish thanks to my parents and since it's my first language. I'm fluent in English as well since it's my second language which I learned at a young age from school, friends, etc. I only speak spanish at home or when the moment calls for. I speak English to and with all my friends at work so it is my main language. Would it be easier for me to learn Spanish to Italian or English to Italian? I'm referring to txt books and such. What do you all think??
I'm 17, and have already graduated high school and I want to speak Spanish so well, that people think it is my first language. Can somebody give me a full guide on how I can learn this language as quick as possible?
I really want to finish this so I can move on to my family's language, which is French. So a quick method is preferable.
i.e. if you speak Polish, he can read Spanish writing with a perfect accent, as it were your first language, even if you have know idea what your reading
I want to learn Spanish. Will watching Spanish TV, listening to Spanish music, and only listening to everything Spanish be helpful? I want to learn Spanish just like I learned American English as my first language.
Yea, what we are taught in school are not the way true Spanish speakers really talk. They use a lot abbreviations and slang.
@Reflections: What are the chat sites?
I'm from NY. I only know little Spanish.
