Can anyone recommend a good Spanish immersion program? I am open to different countries, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Panama, etc... Been to Mexico 9 times now though, so would like to try somewhere different.

I need to make sure I am saying these two sentences right for a project tomarrow.

Costa rica celebrates its culture with many holidays, foods, and dances.
They also, have a great tourist industry and have a democratic republic.

I already know French and English (obviously), and I am now interested in learning Spanish for general knowledge and traveling purposes (next summer I plan to volunteer abroad in Costa Rica). I bought a Berlitz program thing that comes with CD's and internet activities.
If I am willing to put in the necessary time and effort, will I be successful in learning the language?

where's the cheapest place to do it, with the best locals? i'm thinking of volunteering at a wildlife sanctuary in costa rica, but i think there might be too many english speaking tourists to facilitate true spanish immersion. your thoughts and experiences, please!

Wife and I moving to costa rica in January 2008...

I'm going to Costa Rica and despite being told English is spoken, I was told I should get a good English/Spanish Conversational Phrase dictionary. I don't want just words but basic phrases translated and also I understand they don't speak traditional Spanish. I'm looking for things like Can I have the bill, How do I get to..., I have a reservation, etc.

My friend is Mexican and I met him in the 7th grade (he just moved from mexico)and he learned english really quickly (we are now freshman in high school). I asked him how he learned english so fast and he said by watching lots of television. Sooo...

Any good spanish speaking shows I can watch? Im not a big fan of novelas but thats all that basically show on the spanish shows. And any good books in spanish I could read? (Not "how to speak spanish" kinds of books, more like novels written in spanish). Im giong to be going to Costa Rica within the next two years hopefully and want to improve the spanish I learned in high school
*oops I said we are freshman in highschool, I meant to write freshman in college.
Thanks everyone for your advice, but I was looking more into any specific movies, novelas, tv show, books... Especially books around the middle school level :]

I plan on going to the San Jose part of Costa Rica. Any tips so that i do not get ripped off? The exchange rate is like 500 to 1. You would think I would live like a king in that time period but will they only charge American prices in most area's?
Should I bring travelers checks? Are ATM's a rip off? Somethings i would not want to you my credit card for. Any help? Thanks.

Hi! So I want to learn the accent of a specific Spanish country (Chile) but I can't go to Chile since it's so far away. I can either go to Costa Rica or Puerto Rico; I know a Chilean who could teach me spanish 20 hours a week in Santa Fe, New Mexico so I'd get that accent, but Costa Rica is more exotic and farther away, therefore more of an experience. What do you think? Where should I go, if I really want to learn the accent?

I am currently enrolled in a summer travel excursion to Costa Rica to study Spanish. The program cost is about 00 but does not include airfare, tuition, personal expenses, etc. I have looked at some language schools in Costa Rica and they run about 0 a week. (0 X 4 weeks = 1400 + 0 for airfare = 00). I know that the group program includes some transportation and some entertainment but 00 is a big difference in cost no to mention that I would have to pay about 00 in college tuition for credits earned.

I would like to know information on how easy it is to travel in Costa Rica alone or with one other person without being fluent in Spanish. Would it better for me to stay with the group and spend the dough or save money and make the trip myself?

Spanish is my second language, but I would consider myself fluent (Spanish major, spent a year in Costa Rica studying abroad, girlfriend is a native speaker).

I know my potential to get a job will increase, but would my salary increase as well?

I have a few stations in spanish, and I'm going to Costa Rica, so I want to get a little better before I leave. Soap opeeras are fine, but I am not too interested in talk shows, although if there are some good ones, you can list them. Please also tell me what network they are on. Thanks

Foreign language classes have always been a challenge for me. I took Spanish and French classes in high school and College, but my memories of the languages are pretty insubstantial. I think I had trouble with compartmentalized nature in the way languages were taught. I passed the classes simply through memorization, but not real understanding. I visited Italy for a few weeks and I was surprised to find that after a week I starting to understand when people were talking. This also happened during a trip to Costa Rica. I think I need to approach learning language in a more holistic way due to the way my brain works. I'd like to take a crack at learning Spanish again, but want to do it on my own (without traveling). Any tips?
DK-
I don't think my husband would like that.

What is the best school? City to study in? Is there anyone that can help me out that lives in Costa Rica...email me

Where in Latin-America should I go to study Spanish?
It should have warm weather and be relatively safe.

I thought about Nicaragua en Costa Rica, but dropped both for various reasons. I don't necessarily have to go to a big city. I'm quite charmed by small towns as well.

Please give me your recommendation.

Does anyone have a good idea on where i should study spanish once i graduate highschool? I was thinking either Chile Spain or Costa rica. But just give me an idea and an explanation on why

I've studied at several and they all suck...Ecuador, Argentina, Costa Rica, Spain, Guatemala.

I want a Spanish school where the teachers aren't only locals, but actually educated with M.A's in education or Spanish language and teachers who acutally have teaching skills and don't only follow a book.

Please, nothing in Mexico (not interested in that accent).

I have been selected, along with 20 others at my university, to study Spanish abroad for a semester. I can choose to visit one of the following (excluding Spain which is the obvious choice):

1) Argentina (where my husband is from but I've all ready been there)

2) Dominican Republic

3) Ecuador

4) Peru

5) Portugal (for portuguese)

6) Brazil (portuguese)

7) Costa Rica

Which would you choose, and why?
lmao at the b.i.t.c.h who pointed out I have a big forehead. Thanks for pointing out the obvious! At least I have a real pic. Keep hiding behind your avatar kiddo (and remember to avoid violations stay relevant to the question). :) -Mrs. Forehead

a) Mexico
b) Costa Rica
c) Chile
d) Colombia
e.... that's it. ( no more options, other countries speak Spanish from the 16th century using understandable accents )

I want to go to a Spanish speaking country and do volunteer work, like trail maintenance, painting or farming, while learning Spanish. Does anyone know of any good programs that falls under this category? Last summer I was 17 and went to Costa Rica and just learned Spanish, so now I am 18 and would like to do more than just learn the language. I would also like to go to a different country.

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Portugal, England, USA.

I'd like to know which countries speak Spanish as their dominant language. Thank you!
