I know a guy who did that. He has a really great story about how he came about his Spanish name. The poor guy at the desk couldn't pronounce his English name, and after about five tries, he simply pronounced: Your name is Pablo. And that's what they called him the whole time he was there!.

You will be in some sort of program, right? At least with the school, there? I'm sure there will be mixers and such that you will meet your fellow classmates and get to know them pretty quickly.

When I was 20, I took my Junior year in Spain. I did know two other young women from my school, but the members of our program were from a variety of places, and I didn't know them very well, when we left. You will make friends, and quickly. It really doesn't matter where you choose to go, you will most certainly have a great experience and remember your second home very fondly forever. I'm sure you'll have fun! Just don't let the fact that you don't know anyone yet stop you, okay? Have a little sense of adventure, because an adventure this will be!

One other thing...use common sense. And have FUN!

I'm going in November but only for a few weeks. If you contact a school in Antigua (check the internet), they will provide everything from meals to housing to social events, including a ride to and from the airport. Once you have arrived there, you won't be alone. you can do it.

When I studied in Antigua/Jocotenango, Guatemala it was with MUNDO Spanish School. They placed me with a host family who had several other foreign students staying with them. I bonded with them as well as with the host family. They did a great job of taking care of me and making sure I never felt alone. An awesome way to study.
