if you cant learn a language should you try a similar language?
I have a hard time learning Spanish and was wondering if I should try French, Italian or Latin. All of which I think are close to Spanish and if I learn one of those maybe I can ease it to ease in to Spanish.
Yes I know Spanish is the easiest language but for some reason I cant seem to grasp it. Perhaps because I feel I should all ready know it is why it is hard but I don’t know.
I am half Mexican so I should all ready know it but I don’t.
Can you suggest some good learning courses? I did take a class at the college but it went way too fast for me and for private lessons I would have to go to Portland 80 miles away.
Um…I have tried instant immersion Spanish deluxe CD program.
Any ideas?

Hello,
I`m Mexican and not speak English. Only a little. But, understand your question.
I know a Web with podcast about to learn Spanish.
But isn`t Latinoamerica`s Spanish. Is from Spain.
If you want to learn it, visit the next web:
http://notesinspanish.com/
Is free, and you can pay if you want the text on pdf format.
I hope to help you.
Good luck.
any one of those is not easier than spanish ,dont waste your time learn the language you want to learn ,get a spanish friend ,there are millions of those in the States, and download the courses and study at home ,visit spanish speaking countries
etc
Yes, a similar language to what you already know. Something related to English like German or something since I’m assuming English is all you know. Spanish is easier to those that already speak a Latin language. In my case, I know Spanish and I can understand Portuguese and some Italian and a little French. Try mylanguageexchange.com , it might help.
Try portuguese.. it´s pretty similar to spanish too… It´s my first language and it´s so easy… LOL…
Now seriously, you just have to try harder… Portuguese is my first language.. and I learned English by loving it… I´d look for online chats and everything and I was in a English course, so, there were teachers to help.. get interest. Go after it..look for a course… Look for sites online.. every practise helps.. Every language is different… Believe me, I speak portuguese, english and spanish… I can´t understand practically nothing of French… can understand some italian, but it´s not complete… They´re not THAT similar, you know??
Why do you want to have trouble twice?? Latin languages are equaly hard to learn.. then take trouble only once and start with the one you want.. besides everything, you´d end up getting confused with the similarities and differences…
The BBC has some good courses where you can work at your own pace. I’m learning Spanish right now at my high school and French/ any of the other romance languages seem more difficult to me. There is more grammar it seems.
Probably the best way to learn a language in the least amount of time is to immerse yourself into an area where the language is spoken. That however, is not always available.
Spanish grammar is pretty similar to English and many of the words are cognates. The language is pretty easy to pronounce as well. Just scour the Internet for sites that you feel you’d benefit most from.
If you were to try and learn another language, I’d probably recommend French, as it’s the most useful, though Latin might also be interesting, and might possibly help with any languages you learn from then on. Good luck though.
Some of the sites below are good from what I’ve seen.
If you’re having trouble learning a language, the most likely problem is the way you are trying to learn it. The key to learning language is COMPREHENSIBLE input.
1. Conventional methods that rely heavily on the use of grammar are ineffective because the student does not use the lanuage enough to truly ACQUIRE it.
2. Immersion programs are limited because there is less comprehensible input, e.i. a lot of the input is just gibberish to the student.
What you should do is learn specific phrases and use them as often as possible, literally. Think them. Speak them to yourself in ridiculous ways, like "I am not a pretty bunny rabbit." The advantages are:
1. No tedious vocabulary memorization. You know the word because you use it, you aren’t memorizing seventeen different things to say about the weather.
2. You learn grammer naturally by observing how the words are put together. Grammar is not some mysterious subject only understood by scholars: everybody understands grammar if he is able to communicate. This is necessary. So don’t kill yourself about the grammar because you’ll pick it up anyway.
Have another whack at spanish, it’s a really fun language.
Failing that, Italian is probably the next best bet.
French is difficult to teach yourself because of the pronunciation.
ALL Latin education, unfortunately, relies heavily on the use of explicit grammar. Don’t do this if you don’t know your English grammar EXTREMELY well.
Good luck.
My experience for language is, you can only learn from a good tutor. If you tutor is no good you will have a real hard time to learn the language.
People have different ways of grasping knowledge and for you , you need to spend more time on homeworks and memorising. You need to put your mind on it rather than give up, because it would be the same as other language.
One of the simplest means of learning is really communicating, alot of my friends learnt their partners language because they were interested in their partner, and they wanted to understand what his friends are saying, or to get their partners attention they tried hard enough to learn the language so she could also socially mingle with his group. That is a passion.
So if you feel that you are losing the passion for learning try hanging out with people who speak spanish.
I have never tried spanish, but from the languages i was exposed to , french, german, arabic, malay , tagalok.
I would say french is easier for me because my language has alot of french words in it.
Saying so, malay and tagalok are easy too, because they dont have much of grammer in them.
So see how does french sound to you. But i really think that you just need more encouragement for yourself to continue the spanish, ignore people in your class and do it for yourself. But if it is because you need to pass the course then that is a different story.
Also try http://www.bbc.com , there is a section for all different languages in it. Try there and also find an online pal and learn from them.
The most effective way is learning it in a new group of spanish friends
Good luck
general thing man… i am Russian came here (USA) 5 years ago, learn English in 1 year (but i was exchange student and i lived with American family) So best way to learn language to go there (Spanish speaking country) and stay there for 6-12 month. Any other way is sooooo boring and difficult
Do you have any relatives who speak Spanish who can help you learn? I would not suggest Latin <too many tenses & verb and noun changes>. It’s more difficult than Spanish. French is significantly different sounding and different ending than Spanish. Try the CD program a couple of more times before you give up. It takes time to learn another language when your not a kid.
Buena suerte!
http://www.wordreference.com/
try rosetta stones.it’s a software that will help you learn.they say it’s effective.
Language is about repetition. "what do the stupid people in Mexico speak ?"
just stick to spanish it’s actually easier than french.
maybe you didn’t pick up on spainish because you had no heart for it? i only got into japanese becuase i thought the language was worth learing and would be fun. ive tried spanish, [though i wont say that i took the class], and ive found it not interesting, fun, or enjoyable. i think for that reason, i have only the smallest foundation in spanish.
i suggest, that before you take any other steps, find out what you find interesting. what culture intregues you? what language do you think is fun to listen to/ speak?
