I would have thought you would have had an English -Spanish dictionary already but seeing as you haven’t then yes…it is an absolute necessity if you want to improve your vocabulary.
Learning online is definitely the most effective way of learning Spanish but unfortunately there is very little ne for free that is of any real value which will mean you will have to purchase a course.
Rosetta Stone is a good course but expensive and you can get much more affordable courses that still offer excellent course-ware and have excellent results, fast too! Check out http://www.learnspanishsoftwarereview.com for the best ‘budget priced’ courses online.
Another suggestion is that you look at a verb trainer as verb conjugation in Spanish is particularly difficult and a good piece of software that gives excellent results is the verbarrator and you can find out more about that here http://www.irregularspanishverbs.com/verbarratorreview.html
Good luck and enjoy your studying
Spanish-English dictionaries REALLY help.
So far, the hardest thing I’ve learned in Spanish class is Preterit [and all of the tenses]
If you have a good site that teaches you all of the rules AND you have a dictionary, you should be fine
This supposedly teaches you SUPER fast
