If you don’t know any Italian at all or only know some phrases but can’t put together your own sentences, Rosetta is the best thing out there.
Take it from me, I’ve spent over $3000 on different books, programs and CDs to learn languages over the years and the only thing that worked was Rosetta.
I used it for French for about a month and then I took the placement test at my university and I got to skip the first year of French (two classes, which would have cost $15,000+ the extra time going to class for a year). I took the second-year class last semester, I easily got an A despite I’m not a studier, everyone said they liked the way I spoke French the best, I got the second-highest grade in the class and I’d never taken French before Rosetta Stone.
It’s definitely the fastest way. You might want to get an Italian-English dictionary too for when you don’t know a word, and if you really need explanations for things, check out "Italian Demystified" which explains the grammar nicely. "Easy Italian Reader" is also a good book if you want to feel like you really know Italian, but you have to know quite a bit before you can use it, so use Rosetta first and you can read the Reader on the plane to Italy.
Read the Wikipedia article on Italian first to get a general sense of what to expect. Also check out LiveMocha.com, which is a free website with a program very similar to Rosetta Stone, but with much less content. Look for Italian-language podcasts on ITunes, they’re free and some can be really helpful.
The fastest way possible would be to move to a country that speaks Italian, so that you are completely surrounded by the Italian language, culture, and people. This would also force you to use Italian in your everyday life, and you would learn faster.
If that is not an option, then you should take classes with an instructor who is a native speaker. I’d advise not to use any of those online classes or anything, because you wouldn’t be able to ask the instructor specific questions if you had any. I do know that some places offer "fast-track" courses, which compacts the course into a shorter amount of time for those planning on travelling to a country in a couple months that speaks the language. What you’ll have to do is research on the internet or in your community for local Italian classes.
Good luck.
Take some courses at a community college if there’s enough time. If the class trip is coming up soon get a tutor.
