Actually you would use more of the imperfect tense than the preterite tense. Use the imperfect tense for things such as repeated actions, things you did many times, etc. Like, "when I was a little girl I always went to the park." Or "I never used to play baseball." Use the preterite tense for one time actions.
you would use the preterite tense of spanish. try starting a sentence with "cuando yo era un nino…" which means "when i was a child.." hope it helps. also, search for a chart or something that has the verb endings in the preterite, to help you conjugate the verbs you need
You can say, "De niño/a, …." That means, "As a child, …."
Here is a song that will help you:
Cuando yo era niña con mis padres vivía
En una casa blanca al lado del mar
Con las gaviotas iba al cielo a volar
Pero siempre yo volvía
A la casita del mar
Yo siempre cantaba; en la arena bailaba
Y yo sentía mucha paz
Mis padres me cuidaban
Su amor ellos me daban
Y yo no quería nada más
Translation:
WHEN I WAS A CHILD:
When I was a child, I lived with my parents
In a white house by the sea
With the seagulls I flew *to the sky
But I always returned
To the seaside house
I always sang; I danced on the sand
And I felt much peace
My parents took care of me
They gave me their love
And I didn’t want anything more
You can use both past tenses… your kid should understand
viví con mis padres
vivía con mis padres.
I lived with my parents.
