How do you feel about being required to learn Spanish (or another language) to graduate or apply for a job?
I went out to eat with a couple of my friends and one of them said:
"I'm sick of everyone having to study and speak Spanish everywhere we go just to communicate. It isn't fair that we have to do so. If you went to any other country in the world, you'd have to learn their native language FIRST, not they learn ours. If you want to communicate in France, you must know French. In Germany, German. It is simply not right. By us Americans requiring everyone to learn Spanish and make our businesses and schools speak it, we are enabling Hispanics to be delinquent; we are allowing them to not do what is required to become citizens, which is speak English, because you can't become a citizen without knowing English. We are letting them slide, which is not fair to the other immigrants, and it is not fair to us at all. This is America, we speak English. Hispanics are having their way around here."
What do you think?

I don’t think that totally accurate. Hispanics do their part and try to learn English, but MOST Americans don’t feel like learning other languages at all. They feel very comfortable in their own bubble. America doesn’t force Spanish down our throats, it’s just what’s recommended because there are a lot of Hispanics here. I don’t think that us learning Spanish is letting the immigrants off the hook. It’s simply learning another beneficial language.
I always have felt like, what could it possibly hurt to be more educated in something?
I agree. But I think we should learn it anyway. You can’t win a battle if you don’t understand what the enemy is saying. And no, I didn’t say that all Hispanics are the enemy. But illegal immigrants as a group ARE. Individually some of them are decent people. But as a group they have a mob mentality and an indecent sense of entitlement.
Okay, step down off your soap box. I have to agree with he first guy….nothing wrong with being more educated. Stop giving foreigners a reason to think we are all idiots. You are right this is America, and the predominate languages are English and Spanish. When you visit another country, isn’t it even a little nice when you walk in a shop and the person knows English???
I am AMAZE OF YOU MEMORY wow you were able to remember your friend entire dialogue DOWN TO THE PUNCTUATION.
Anyways back to your question. In the best of all worlds, your interests & abilities will solve somebody else’s problem and by been able to speak in another language you solve some of the problem. And by someone else’s problem I mean the person hiring you
thats ridiculous
