I translated the sentences respected the tences you used in your English text, but I must tell you the sequence of tenses you used is not correct. Everything would have been in the past tense. So there is one verb form ("is") used twice in your text, which should have been "was".

Thanks for you interest, but I’m not just "almost" correct in my answer. Below, I’ll post the link to the dictionary of the Real Academia de la Lengua Española so that you can check the meaning of "competencia". It is safe to use words like "competencia", "carrera" and "competición" here.
I make mistakes just like other people and I welcome corrections when I am wrong, but this is not one of those cases. I wouldn’t post an incorrect answer here; I take this as seriously as I take my job. And I do exactly this for a living; I’m not an amateur. If I made a mistake in such a simple translation, I should consider looking for a different line of work.

Claire61 is almost correct. The word you want is "la competición" or "el concurso", for "competition" or "contest", respectively.
You cannot run in a "competencia". For example…
The competition between the boys was so fierce that they decided to resolve it with a competition. The first competition is "competencia" and the second, the race itself, is the "competición".
Edited:
The ref you cited lists competencia as the 6th and dead last definition for a competitive match. Plus it pertains only to Latin America. Competencia is not the word here… it should be competición, whose primary field of meaning lies in sports.
