How different is the Spanish language spoken throughout the world?
I am debating whether to learn Arabic or Spanish as a third language. I am wondering if I was to learn Spanish, the dialect taught in American schools, would I be able to understand the Spanish spoken in Spain, Mexico, Uruguay, and so on? I know there are differences in the language between countries but would it be too difficult for a non-native speaker to understand?

Spanish is spoken all around the world, and accents and dialects are very different. There are many words that just exist in one region, or that have one meaning in a region, and another meaning in another zone.
I’m a native speaker, and I can tell you that anyway, the Spanish dialects can be understood by all, even non-native speakers. There are some phrases or words that you may not understand, but forums in diverse websites can help you with that.
Plus, you get a lot of fun listening to the other dialects, because the sounds are very unique by zone.

Most Spanish versions are similar I have been learning spanish in school now for 2 years and it is pretty much a simple language to understand.

well, the Spanish of Spain and Mexico is slightly different. The spanish in Spain has more of a slur to it compared to the Mexican spanish. I’m Canadian and I’m learning Mexican Spanish. I have heard people from Spain and different countries, like Venezula, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, etc. For the most part, yes, I could still understand them. Their accent was just a little different. Puerto Ricans speak fast and with a slight different accent, but after a while you learn to understand them as well. Cubans have a different spanish. Even some of their words mean different than Mexican words. But for the most part, to answer your question, I believe you would be able to understand Spanish pretty well no matter where they’re from.
Just make sure your dedicated in learning. It’s not hard, you just have to put time into it, in speaking, reading, and writing it. Speaking it will be the greatest help.
i dont think it would bee soo difficult. the truth is there are lots of dialects with different pronunciation and vocabulary. but im sure you’ll be able to understand. my suggestion s you should learned the basic spanish, the one it is talked in spain. then maybe if you are too interested you can have classees of some different dialects. luck!
yes we can all understand each other but there are many differences in terms of slang and accents even inside our countries
Actually Spanish, is pretty much the same in all of the Latin American countries. There are variations in accents and sounds. Most of the pronunciation and all of the grammar rules and the spelling, is exactly the same.
The biggest difference is between Latin American Spanish and European Spanish (spoken in Spain) and again the difference is the accent. The language is pretty much the same, with of course regional expressions and such.
I am not a native speaker, but this is how it is for me.
I learned Spanish in high school (Mexican Spanish). I can pretty much understand everyone in Central and South America. The Spanish of Argentina and Chile sounds a little bit different to me, but when spoken slower, it is no problem to understand.
Spanish from Spain is a little bit harder to understand, the "R’" sounds a little bit different to me, and it generally sounds a little bit different, but once you hear it enough, it should be easier to understand.
My main trouble came from Puerto Rico and Cuba. When people from PR or Cuba speak fast to me, I cannot understand it, they do not stress the syllables as much as Mexican or Castillans (Spain) do. I got used to it because I listened to a lot of PR and Cuban music, but they can still be very difficult for me to understand.
Overall, it is pretty similar to the differences between Englishes from all over the world. Some of it has little to no difference, while some dialects will be very hard to understand.
there is no ONE dialect taught in American schools! Every school decides such things on their own. Mostly, they depend on the expertise of their teachers. Teachers usually teach the dialect of: A) whatever THEY learned in school + B) wherever THEY lived.

Spanish is Spanish, just like English is English. There are minor differences, some word choices, slang, minor grammatical differences.
I’m going to tell you a story:
EVERY textbook in the US has all six forms of all the verbs. Include vosotros. Most teachers teach it. Many expect their students to KNOW and be able to USE it. Some say: "It’s only used in Spain. You should know it’s there, but if you never go to Spain, you’ll probably never use it." (It’s included prominently on the AP exams) I lived in Spain. I was having a conversation with three of our native housemates, and two other Americans. One of them suddenly got massively confused, and asked the girls, what that form was. She’d never heard it. They told her, and explained its usage. She frowned, then went…Oh, yeah! That was in the textbook! My teacher said to just ignore it. "Nobody uses it anymore!"
Hmmmm. Her teacher was a native Cuban. Yet, here she was, with five people who used it routinely.

I think the Spanish of Argentina is more elaborate than the Spanish of mexico
I’m from Argentina and listen to Spanish mexico I realize that the Spanish of Argentina and Uruguay is different from all america for their pronunciation and intonation, but is more like that of Spain.
