How can you learn a language on your own?
Say I want to learn Spanish, but there isn't really a way for me to take a class or move to Spain or Mexico. I do have friends with whom I can speak Spanish and practice with. How can I learn to read, write, and speak the language on my own? Please assume that I am very serious about this, and I will put in the time and effort to learn and practice.
Thank you.

I agree with above answers. While you’re learning the basics, perhaps you could find some cheap Spanish children’s books on Amazon. That’s what I’m doing to learn re-learn French. I’m studying a textbook, and practicing with children’s books.
Also, if you have iTunes, click on ‘radio,’ and then select ‘International/World’ music. Find a Spanish station that you like! If you don’t have iTunes: http://www.listenlive.eu/spain.html I’ve read that it doesn’t even matter if you try to understand it at first. You can be doing homework and having a spanish station (preferably a talkshow or something) playing in the back ground, and you begin to soak in certain sounds and words.
Of course, Immersion is the best way to learn a language. If you find you have time to go to Spain or Mexico but not the money, you should look into being an ‘au pair’. Basically, you’re taken in by a family for an agreed upon number of months. Your main task would be to watch the kids, and probably teach them a little English. You may also have chores. In return, you get free room and board, free meals, and a weekly or monthly allowance.
Good luck, arabesque!
first go to the store and bye a conjugating spanish to english notebook. start with basics..alfabet,grammer,etc etc.. try hearing more spanish music,tv, etc. start by maybe studying four words a day from a dictionary. then form sentences..but for the most part u really would need hlep with conjugations…it’s probably not as easy to learn that on ur own..but maybe u can idk.
best luck you u
There are many ways for you to do this. Your local public library might have a few language learning books. There are many places online where you can buy tapes, workbooks, and basically a whole language course that you can do on your own. Start taking steps to learn!
I am trying to learn French and Germany simultaneously. I bought the Rosetta Stone for French, but the cost is really too prohibitive for me to buy another.
Have you considered books on learning Spanish? You could learn the correct mechanics of the language and then continue to practice with your friends who speak Spanish; that way they will be able to help you more, especially in the areas of correct pronunciation, etc.
Good luck on you endeavor.
You can try some online coursers of ebooks. They are cheap and worth try. For example http://bit.ly/learn-spanish is proven one
The easy answer to this is to follow the vast majority of Spanish learners these days. Most people now opt for learning Spanish online simply because it provides the flexibility they require and that it resolves many of the issues you state, which again is another reason why they have increased massively in popularity.
Online courses have improved massively in recent years, no longer are they a computerized version of school text books, they now offer complete interaction and utilize techniques such as speech analysis, vocab games and cultural education.
Many of the better courses concentrate on teaching conversational Spanish rather than grammar, although they do provide everything you need to easily pass exams.
So if you want to learn Spanish and there are no facilities available to you to do so, the online Spanish course is your best option. Check out some of the best online courses in the link below.
If you have friends with whom you can speak Spanish – that’s great, it will be way easier for you to learn Spanish!
There are many sites that will help you learn all of these basic things. Use the power of the Internet!
Pronunciation and grammar: go to http://www.studyspanish.com (their pronunciation guide is great!)
Writing skills: use http://www.lang-8.com – write short journal entries and have them proofread by native speakers
Reading skills: http://www.lingq.com have some exercises, but you can simply read Spanish websites, blogs or fairy tales (the best at the beginning)
Listening skills: just download podcasts in Spanish, go to iTunes and you will find many of them, you can also watch Spanish movies with subtitles or listen to the radio/music (but focus on it, singing along is a great way to learn a new language!)
You can also try Mi Vida Loca http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/spanish/mividaloca/ – it’s an amazing, totally interactive (and free) Spanish course.
(I’m in no way affiliated with any of these sites, it’s just my honest recommendation)
When it comes to grammar I would recommend spending more time speaking with your friends rather than studying all of these rules.
Good luck and have fun!
I learned Spanish by working in food service for about 20 years. It was necesito. I was going to suggest Rosetta Stone, but I really just wanted to say, "Hello — I’ve missed you!"
So, "Hello — I’ve missed you !"
"Hola — he echado de menos !"
