You could try Linguasorb Spanish – it’s a course teaching Spanish words using memory aids (you imagine silly images that link the Spanish and English to help you remember them), it’s a different technique that might work for you if you didn’t get on with those other courses.
I learnt Spanish using a similar thing and it helped me learn a lot of words very quickly.
It’s free at the moment..

Not sure if this would work well for you or not, I never have had this problem as I’m one of those people that can pick up Spanish words after looking at them once…but, you could try doing what they did on Full House, lol. They took flash cards, wrote the Spanish word of the object on the card and taped it to the object. For example, the word painting (as in, a portrait of something) is "pintura". If you take an index card and write the word "pintura" on it, and tape it to the painting…well, if you pass by the painting six times a day then eventually you’re going to start associating the word with the object.
Also, you can try coming up with acronyms (like PEMDAS for math) to remember things like days of the week. This example will only help if you have ever watched the show Lizzie McGuire, but this is how I remembered the order of the days of the week in Spanish 1.
The days are, in order, starting with Monday: lunes, martes, miercoles, jueves, viernes, sabado, domingo.
My acronym was:
Lizzie McGuire Made Jo (Lizzie’s mom) (a) Vienna Sausage Dinner (because my family always has vienna sausages…lol)
Of course you can pretty much come up with these for anything…if you need help with any, you can e-mail me if you like.
Another thing that is essential if you’re hoping to become semi-fluent in the lanuage, is PRACTICE! Not only do you need to practice WRITING in Spanish, you also need to be able to SPEAK the language well! I can’t tell you how many times I’m sitting in class and I hear someone pronounce something so horribly you can’t understand it. Make sure you know the Spanish alphabet and how to pronounce each letter, for example; the double L is pronounced as a y, like in the word ‘llama’ (name). It’s not pronounced like a llama in English, haha, but you would say it ‘yah-ma’. Pronounciation is very important…if you say it wrong, people won’t be able to understand you! There are words in Spanish that have very similar spellings that can be easily confused if you don’t pronounce them correctly.
It gets easier to memorize new words as you progress through the language. In the beginning it is difficult, but trust me, it WILL become easier.
Try this in order to Improve your Spanish:

it’s not free but cheap. and It’s not for total beginners

I work as summer intern for Componica, LLC, developer of the iPhone app Memorize Words for Spanish. The app was created as a vocab builder. It utilizes a spaced repetition algorithm so a user can learn thousands of words and still be able to recall them all.
During my summer at Componica, I’ve been using the app because I’ve taken Spanish classes where I’ve learned plenty of grammar, but never mastered the vocab. I’ve discovered that I really have learned large amounts of vocab this summer simply by using the program and playing the games on it.
The application is only a vocab builder so you will not be able to learn phrases from it. We have a free version you can try with a small amount of vocab. If you like it our full version has over 6,300 vocab words.
