Learn to Speak and Understand Spanish
It seems to me odd that we allow 12 or 20 million people here against the law, millions more within the law, and none of them can be required to learn English. But that a serious presidential candidate would then suggest we all learn their language instead. Does that seem right; should we all be required to learn Spanish?

English is the language of prosperity. If you want to succeed, learn English. It’s that simple. If you aren’t smart enough to learn English, then you’re not going to be successful anyway.
Check out the immigration laws in other countries. Ours are the most generous that exist.

By wanting us to learn Spanish, the people who don’t will be effectively cut out of the job market. Take this as a warning – a lot of "bilingual preferred" jobs go to people who only speak Spanish (the rationale is that they can work with others who only speak Spanish and serve Spanish only customers in places where there are a lot of Spanish speakers). It isn’t too difficult to see which demographic group would be most hurt by this.

I support his notion that American kids need to be bi-lingual too just like the majority of kids in those technological advanced countries.

There are parts of Maine and here in Pennsylvania where people only spoke French… The Public Schools in the US were originally developed to teach Gaelic speaking Scotts, Germanic, and Italian speaking Americans English. We’ll handle it here in Public Schools, I guess. Give it a Generation.

It is already a requirment in Florida, Texas, New Mexico and other States prior to getting a Civil Service or Public Service Job. And Obama had nothing to do with that.

What he asserted was that everyone could benefit by learning a second language. He didn’t single out Spanish, and he also said that people who don’t speak English should learn to speak English.

One thing I like about our education system is the kids can choose differnt paths, if they are into art they can study art, or take auto mechanics, if they are studious they can take more difficult classes, or foriegn language.
Learning another language should not be mandatory, it should be choice.

I don’t think it hurts to expand one’s horizons but the notion that we need to change our ways to help the illegal aliens is pretty dumb.
I flew through Mexico City about a year ago and guess what? I didn’t see a single sign in English at the airport.
We should learn a second language, yes. If you expect to ever leave your hometown and get a job that pays well and provides for your family in the future, it will be a huge asset to have a working understanding of the Spanish language. If you don’t want to learn it, fine….but it is only hurting you in the long run. Since you are taking this out of context to try to score points, you obviously don’t care about the real issue that faces our next generation. When the rest of the world’s graduates know 2 and 3 languages, we look uneducated and unwilling to change with the global market….not something most employers are seeking.

My great-grandparents fled Russia…my great-grandfather could read, write, and speak at least 11 languages. He felt it was important that since the USA was founded by English speaking people, English is the common language to be learned in order to become American.
I don’t think knowing several languages is a bad thing, but I do believe that if you choose to come to this country then you choose to assimilate to it, not bend it to you, therefor, learn English.

I speak spanish, but not fluently. I can pretty much find my way around though,say if i got stuck in Mexico, it wouldnt be for more than two hours….

Extolling the virtues of learning another language in the context of a discussion about illegal immigration is like giving a speech about the benefits of frequent sexual intercourse to a group of rape survivors. The issue is that the conduct is being FORCED upon us, whether it’s beneficial or not.

You obviously have missed the boat on what a huge potential market the spanish speaking community represents to the economy of the US. They many times pay CASH for goods and services. They are a very liquid group that may be able to provide a stabilizing catalyst and be part of the support our failing/failed economy and country have become. I welcome our brothers and sisters from spanish speaking countries and I will improve my grasp of their language to tap into this great market of opportunity. Broaden your horizons there is a whole world out there outside of your limited scope of understanding.

Why wouldn’t you want to expand your mind with one or more other languages? Or is it that you just don’t like Mexicans? Spanish is a language used in places other than Mexico. Why not learn Russian, Chinese, Japanese, or any other language that is out there.
Open your mind and you’d be surprised just how large the world really is. Yes, there is life beyond the borders of the U.S..
