Do you learn a foreign language before you go to that country?
I ask about Mexicans, and wonder why they don't learn the language at least before illegally immigrating to our country.
It never fails that someone asks "Why don't you learn Spanish before you go to Mexico?"...
The argument always ends when I reply with "I did."
And I would learn any language (enough to communicate) before I went to that country, or at least get a translator. I think it's very rude, just like I do about the illegal Mexicans.
Do you? Why or why not?

I have learned the basic customs and enough language to get by before visiting any other country. Its only being a good tourist. That being sad, I wish more tourists who visit Quebec would not get their panties in a twist when no one bends over backwards to accommodate them in English.
And of course, it is rather bothersome when people move to another country but cannot be bothered to learn the language…..but I am referring to those who have lived here for years, and still cannot speak any English or French…not those fleeing here in search of a better life. Those are the people my country was built on.
Of course you, who is white, middle-class, with a job (or at least money from Mommy and Daddy), and with plenty of access to books and computers would.
Too bad the people immigrating are usually extremely poor, jobless, occasionally homeless, and so the luxury of taking classes or logging on to the Internet to learn a few phrases isn’t really available for them. For some crazy reason, making sure they and their families survive and have money and food to continue to live is a little more important than learning how to say "Hello, my name is" in English.
How nice that you have the money to afford a translator. Gee, I don’t understand why poor immigrants working below minimum wage wouldn’t have the funds available for that.
yeah, i will , at least i should know its body language.
i think your question title is not in line with your question body…
if you ask why Mexicans don’t learn English before getting to the US, the first answerer told you right in the face – they are running for their lives so it is really not their priority to learn English BEFORE going to the US.
as for your Spanish – you probably learned it to feel better with yourself, to develop your skills and cultural awareness, to be sure you will be able to communicate in Mexico, not because you were afraid that you might offend Mexicans if you don’t speak their language. and after all – Spanish is more spoken language than English – why not learn it if you are capable of learning it and you can afford it?
if you are asking about learning any foreign language before going to a coutnry – why should you? i travel a lot – i will not have the time to learn all the languages i need to
what about Bulgarian? or Greek? or Hungarian? or Polish?
No need to learn these languages as they are spoken only in the specific countries, not popular and common – Unless you are going to live there for many years, of course. But even then – you would learn the language best and faster on site – total immersion is great for foreign languages!
