It will be hard to understand the lectures if you don’t! Write and ask the uni what language they lecture in.
As far as I know, you would not.
But I agree, you should know Catalian. I’d suggest bringing along a tape recorder and seeing if there is someone there who speaks English that could translate it for you. Unless you speak FLUENT Spanish, I would bring the tape recorder anyway.
It doesn’t sound like you have much time until you would be applying. In that case, I’d suggest Rosetta Stone. It seems to work well in a short amount of time (I’m looking into getting it, but I’ve read many good reviews). It’s around $500 for the whole set, but a local library may have a copy. Spanish is pretty popular. Even if they don’t, you could request they buy it or order it from a near by library.
