Can you become proficient in a second language if you start learning at the age of 25?
I'm trying to learn Spanish now. I took Latin in high school but never learned to speak it. Who actually speaks Latin? Anyway, do I have a chance at learning to speak Spanish in a way that approaches how native speakers speak?
For that matter, could I learn to play the piano at this point in my life with little prior musical experience?
So much stuff I wish my parents had forced me to learn...

Yes, you can become proficient, especially at the young age of 25. Many college students are learning languages of hebrew, greek, and latin, which they never heard before. It may take a while, but you will learn spanish if you immerse yourself in the language and culture.
yes if you practice and imitate them totally, many Soviet Spies during the cold war had perfect American accents because they learned the language so well to fit in
Anything is possible, but the best way to learn a language is by being FORCED to learn it. Like by going overseas to a country where that is all they speak and therefore you must speak it too.
You can do anything you put your mind to! I’m 27 and I’m CONSTANTLY looking for fun new things to learn. It’s addicting! You’ll do great! Don’t worry so much.
Oh, and I know how to say, "In wine, there is truth" in Latin.
It’s:
En Veno Veritas
Probably the wrong spelling though.
yes, you’re able to learn at any age…
i’m in a language class now with people who are 22, 25, and 39 and they all speak incredibly well
I think it matters more the person than the age. I’ve been trying to learn spanish since I was 15 (past 6 years) but still am not fluent.
I heard from a teacher a long time ago that if you’re good in math then you’ll learn a language more quickly.
Best of luck!
It’s never too late to learn anything. Don’t set limitations for yourself. It will make you underachieve. Don’t blame your parents either. They did the best they could at the time. You are able to learn new things now, so go for it.
I do believe that you have the ability to become very proficient in Spanish at this age, but you would have to be able to immerse yourself in the language and culture. Im not sure if you have this type of flexibility, but if you can study abroad or live in Latin America for at least a year, you will be stunned with how quickly and easily you pick the language up. Give it a try!
Sure, it’s possible. Think about the fact that a child can become proficient in just a couple of years, with no language skills at all. If you work hard and immerse yourself in the language as much as possible, you’ll be surprised how quickly you can learn… anything.
You can learn to play the notes on the piano pretty easily. If you don’t have natural rhythm or musical talent, it will be harder to make real music, though.
yes u can but it is better for you to learn it while your young. but sure u can learn it. u can do whatever u set ur mind to
regards good luck
Listen my friend, its never too late to learn anything… and even more at your age. You are only 25 years old!! Come on dude… your brain is not that full… you can still learn many things… and well learning a language is always difficult, but you can do it… and well sometimes if we learn another language we are not going to sound the same way as a native speakers because as the words says it THEY ARE NATIVE!! lol and well we are not… well in this case I am I speak Spanish and English as you can see lol… and I also speak some French but hey I don’t sound like a native speaker… although I can be undertood… but don’t worry you can learn as many things as you want… as long as you believe in yourself… if you can believe it you can achieve it… and the most important key to success DONT GIVE UP!! Hope this works… and always be positive… have hope and everything will be given to you…
Yes, if you really committed in doing it.
yeah you can learn a seconde language "IF YOU WANT TO."
you see…as long as you want something, you can really pursue it. if you are very EAGER and very patient towards a certain language that you love! THEN! you can learn it bit by bit and after a few months you start to notice that you actually learn a lot of stuff!
i think you can also learn how to play an instrument "if you want to." AS long as you want something then A DESIRE will always be there! just put some patience and perseverance!
hehehehe…..learning a 2nd language and learning how to play a musical instrument adds one point to your life experiance and maybe to your over-all impact to a girl..or a boy hehehe
by the way force learning is not good! it will reap out the heart in your soul!!! whatever! but it’s a hell to be FORCED LEARNER!
Yes, but you have to practice continuously.
The primary difference between you and a child learning to speak Spanish is that a child’s brain becomes programmed to recognize all the specific sounds of his native tongue(s), and around 2 years of age, that programming ceases. This is why people who are exposed to a foreign language at a later age have more difficulty pronouncing the sounds of that language, and also they may exhibit a persistent accent.
Yes, 25 is not too old to learn.
The best way to learn a foreign language is total immersion in a language school located in a country where that language is spoken.
There are many such language schools for Spanish; you can find them in most Latin American countries or in Spain. Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico must have a dozen.
Such courses usually involve 25 or so hours of class per week, and the schools normally offer other activities (special classes such as cooking, music, culture, etc.), conversational exchanges with natives who are learning English or another language, parties, and trips (which may last a day or a weekend at the beach). Students stay with a family.
The cost will probably be about $125 to $150 per week (most charge by the week; you can take one or more weeks of class. You’ll probably need about six months if you’re a beginner.) Room and board will probably be $150 to $200 per week.
Search for "intensive Spanish classes" or "Spanish immersion" with or without a country name.
of course you can…i know this lady who started learning german at the age of 27…trust me she speaks german as fluent as her mother tongue hindi…its not as hard as you might think..
That is exactly when i started to study English, and after two years of going to classes and tons of books written in that languages, it sank into my brain to the point, that writing and thinking in English for me is easier than in my native Russia.
I have an accent, but that is i am not worried about, in the least…many people find it adorable and cute.
I started to study Italian at 37 and French at 40..
But without practice, keeping these languages are hard…
So, it is never to late to learn, indeed.
