Yes, many people do speak English and it is probably the language that is spoken in the most countries, but depending on what criteria you use to calculate the most popular language, the winner would be Chinese, with Spanish and Hindi also being more widely used than English. The disparity in the figures arises from not really knowing how to calculate them. Do you just take the number of people to whom English is the official language of their country (115 countries) or do you include those people who can speak English but it is not their main language, or what?

Spanish is officially spoken in 20 countries , Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela but then again you have all the Spaniards who live in USA, Canada, Morocco, and the Philippines who speak Spanish but it is not an official language of those countries.

However you arrive at your figures it is fair to say that around 350 million people speak Spanish in the world today and somewhere around about the same figure speak English. One popular way to learn to speak Spanish is by using the Rocket Spanish course. At the moment, a FREE 6-day introductory course is available which makes talking Spanish even easier.

The Spanish language started in Europe around 2 or 3 centuries BC when the Celtic language was mixed with Latin and Arabic. It is estimated that approximately 3000-4000 words in today's Spanish are derived from Arabic.  Although Spanish has spread widely around the world there is not very much variation in how it is spoken i.e. a Spanish speaker from Spain would be able to understand a Spanish speaker in California or Mexico even though the dialects are different. Regional differences are not so great as to make the language unintelligible to speakers from different areas.
Spanish is one of the five official languages of the United Nations.
